Remember that rare items can only have one hole! Also, the hole can only appear on a weapon, armor, shield, or helmet.
Crafted Items
Crafted (self-made) items can't be purchased, found on the battlefield, or won in Gamble. They can only be created using special recipes. The name of a crafted item is colored orange, and the item itself can have up to ten properties! This is why recipes for crafted items are so valuable.
To craft a crafted item, you must strictly follow the recipe. If the recipe specifies that an item should be magical, it must be magical (i.e., its name is colored blue). Also, the properties of crafted items are random (at least the stats vary).
All of these recipes are based on the same principle: take the magical item you want to change, place it in the Horadric Cube, add a perfect stone or skull, a jewel, and a specific rune.
If all the ingredients are correct, the resulting item will have not only the fixed properties defined by the recipe itself, but also new ones, sometimes even ones that other item types wouldn't have! Plus, you made the item yourself—a touch of creativity.
