There are a lot of metal detector caches in Vegas. The main Vegas cache can be found with a metal detector at the Caravan Parking lot, next to the "Welcome Las Vegas" sign. It's a gold casino chip (greatly increases your chances of winning at poker and roulette if you hold it). With a Naturalist rating of 75, the chance of digging it up is 1% (if your Naturalist rating is below 75, don't even try; the chance is 0%). In the same location, near a truck (near the entrance to "Clean City"), there's another item with the same chance of being found. It's not particularly rare, but it's still very good and expensive.
Warning: if you want to complete the Mayor's quest, don't give the police any receipts or holodisks until you've completed it.
Receipts can and should be turned in to the police, as they grant money and XP. However, you'll need to steal them back later (to complete the Mayor's quest). It's best to hand over the receipts to the policeman standing near the bars; he'll give you XP and a cash reward for them. You can hand them over to the Chief of Police, but he'll give less XP and no reward at all. You should always steal the receipts from the Chief of Police. Sometimes, you'll keep the receipts even after handing them over to the police.
This doesn't affect the quest in any way. You can also hand over the casino owner's voice recording, "Hal Wallace." It's worth the receipt from the Nursery, and you'll get +500 XP. However, if you decide to complete the mayor's quest, Hal Wallace is finished anyway, so it's best to kill him yourself (the easiest way is with plastic explosives). You'll get less XP (+200), but you'll receive the unique "Colt Revolver" pistol, a very powerful and beautiful pistol (the comment on it reads "... when you look at it, you feel like you're God"). All of this must be done before handing Hal Wallace over to the police or completing the Mera quest (killing him doesn't affect the Mera quest). You can learn about this pistol in a $10 conversation with the bartender at the Three Cards Casino.
Most of the receipts can also be turned in to the cops after completing the mayor's quest. You can also refer to them without stealing, but these two options can cause strange glitches.
Caravan Parking:
Immediately near the entrance to the first location, you'll find caravan drivers who were ambushed. If you talk to them, they'll give you a quest to find the missing. You can also heal the wounded in dialogue (First Aid 75 or Doctor 50; if you lack the skills, you can also use the Doctor's Briefcase or First Aid Kit; just keep them in your inventory, and dialogue options for using them will appear). At the scene of the attack (the gas station), everything is simple: find all the bodies, bury them (there's a shovel in one of the wagons), and then follow the tracks (Perception 5). The tracks will be at the top of the building after the burial. Then you'll need access to the Internal Troops base. The survivor will also be found in the BB.
You can hand over the attackers to the general (you'll need the dog tag from the body) or talk to them (they'll be standing at the entrance to the barracks). If you mention evidence in conversation, you can force them to show you the entrance to the stash. You'll find yourself in a small trap-lined area, where a ruined building has a descent into the basement. Two robbers are on duty there (they'll be there even if you hand them over to the general). You can't negotiate with them; you can only kill them. Alternatively, you can take a detour by dismantling the boards blocking the passage to the chest.
Inside, you'll find all the loot except the money. You'll receive the device needed for the SLS. If you give them the "device needed in SLS" and the money, they'll reward you with a unique leather jacket called "Caravanner's Overalls." As the jacket itself states, "Special clothing for maximum mobility in desert conditions" increases movement speed and removes almost all movement penalties on the map (movement speed in mountains, swamps, etc. is significantly improved). If you have the quest reward, three caravanners may attack you on the global map.
A caravanner will be nearby if you helped him in the BB. He'll give you anti-radiation nuts. You can also learn about the "Black Caravan" from him. You can gamble with the caravanner at the inn for a stimulator.
Trading 90 will unlock access to an improved selection at the nearby shop.
Once you have a car, the merchant will sell more batteries and a tip on the Skitter (to upgrade the car).
At the Tire Dump location, in the upper right corner, you can blow up some tires (using a timed explosive). This will clear a path to a crate containing several useful items.
You can get a piece of the "substance" from the guy in the room, which is used in the Sam Phillips case (a quest in the Hard Rock Cafe), but only after accepting the corresponding quest from the cafe owner. You need reputation with the caravanners or 250 karma. With this trick, you can either exonerate him or put him in jail—depending on what you tell the police. If you choose the second option (put him in jail), you'll get -10 karma and be unable to get Big Louie a job as a singer at the cafe (if you've completed his entire questline and become his henchman).
Hard Rock Cafe:
You need to deliver a hitchhiker here.
There's a drug addict wandering around near the Hard Rock Cafe. If you talk to him, he'll disappear, but he'll return later and tell you something interesting. If you search near it with a metal detector, you'll find a "Noose" made from a guitar string. It can be used to silently kill a target by sneaking up behind them (this method of killing is unrelated, as you'll never get experience for it).
Inside the cafe, the waitress is the girl you're looking for in Ted Bundy's quest (if you're playing as a female character). There's a guy standing near the counter who, after a conversation, will give you part of a body care set.
On the right, you'll find a female gamer. Talking to her will unlock a quest to repair a slot machine (you'll need to ask the bartender's permission before attempting to repair it). To successfully repair the machine, your Repair, Erudition, and Gambling skills must total 120.
One of the patrons has a useful case (steal it and open it at the workbench). It can be opened either by hacking or repairing; high values (around 75) are required. Either way, opening it will result in a significant -75 karma penalty (but it's worth it: +5% critical hit).
Here, you can also take a pizza delivery job (from the bartender) or go to the boss and receive his quest. To complete the boss's quest, you'll need to approach one of the caravan drivers in the first location and pick up a clue. Then, give the clue to the cops.
To accept the pizza delivery quest, you need 7 Charisma and 60 Trade. Be as polite as possible with all three customers, then you'll receive bonuses at the cafe (20% discount).
At the very bottom of the location lives a comedian who needs to be delivered to Reno. There
's also a guy who lost his glasses. They can be found with a metal detector nearby.
Slave City:
There's a ring here where you can earn money and reputation. There's also a trainer who increases your hand-to-hand combat skill four times by 5% for $1,000 per training session. After the fourth training session, your Strength increases by 1.
There's also a tired muscleman near the ring. A woman with 7 Charisma and 7 Dexterity can give him a massage. There's some option for a guy with an SLS massager, but there's no exact information yet.
A rusty katana can be found in one of the graves; this one is different from the others. It has a tire instead of a cross. It can be cleaned at a workbench and used as a weapon. It can be used as a weapon even in its rusted state, but cleaning it increases its damage stats. Cleaning it requires a burp and flamethrower fuel. This is one of the most powerful melee weapons in the game. Besides its powerful strike, the Katana has a striking range of 2 tiles, similar to a spear (except the Katana costs less per turn). The Rusty Katana is also found with the Kings gang; they can be found on the global map if you walk around Las Vegas.
Near the entrance, you'll meet a guy who dreams of rescuing his brother from slavers. You can give him a note in stealth mode and help him escape, or simply ransom him. In exchange, you'll receive a walkie-talkie (any other radio will do), which you can use to lure the boss out of his office to raid his safe. The safe contains a receipt needed for the mayor's quest. Recording the conversation with the slaver on your Pip-Boy is impossible—he'll expose you no matter what.
You can chat with the smoker outside. If you have the Slaver's Note, and your combat stats are high (9 Strength or 75 Unarmed), you can beat the location of the nursery out of him or where to find the "Black Caravanners"—your choice. The XP rewards are the same for each choice. You can persuade him to quit smoking, for which he'll give you his lighter. If you search his left with a metal detector, you can find a "micronuclear battery."
Hoover Dam:
To gain access inside the dam, you can use Erudition or buy the password from a lone worker.
If you turn on the radio, you can overhear a conversation about a stash. You need to leave the location and return, then use Erudition (lockpicking works too) on the lantern. You don't need to leave the location. If you overhear it, you can take it immediately. The lantern is closest to the worker walking near the entrance.
Bob Neil is looking for replacement workers for the dam. You can buy slaves for him, but the best option is to give work to the freaks. This will require some running around, but there's nothing difficult about it.
You can buy a pressure regulator for the main control system from the quartermaster for $500 or ten pizzas, or if you're a Nuka-Cola courier, for 250 bottles.
There's a golden pistol in the desk in the office - and it's awesome! Compared to the regular one, it has increased penetration (this is very useful, since standard ammo for it deals double damage but has reduced penetration; this pistol removes this weakness). The rest of the stats are the same.
Electrical Engineer Ed can offer you a Pip-Boy upgrade (it grants the "Empathy" skill), as well as two upgrades for the laser pistol (the first upgrade increases shot penetration, the second upgrade increases power by 50% but reduces magazine size by 50% and reduces range), and the plasma pistol by magazine size. You can also upgrade the Power Knuckle to the Power Super Knuckle. Upgrading the laser rifle doubles the ammunition. Plasma Rifle - Increases power and a good increase in range.
Dead Hotel:
The freaks live here. There are only a couple of quests for them, and none of them start here.
You can also use the radio to eavesdrop on the conversation of the police officers who are watching the freaks. There's some loot in the dungeon and the neighboring building.
You can record the conversation with the freaks to incriminate them to the police. If you accidentally do this and don't want to turn them in, throw the disc away.
Clean City
The most important quest here is the mayor's. It's best to take it right away, although you can also come with all the receipts. Callahan is a huge bug. If you see his corpse when you enter the city, you've caught the bug. You can still turn in the quest, so don't worry. But if he's still alive, don't talk to him at all. You need to talk to the other participants in the conspiracy (receipts alone aren't enough): the police chief, the mayor's assistant, the slave trader leader, the freaks, and the casino owner, Monty. You also need to talk to Neil at the dam to find out what all this is about.
To access the mayor's office, you need level 10, the title of Uranus City Sheriff, or one of the receipts. To receive the quest, you need level 16 or a Speech skill of 90. Also, if you wander around the city and question various key characters (like the police chief), you can ask to see the mayor as a detective. You can also find heart pills in the mayor's closet. Take them with you.
The police station will be your main focus here. If you don't complete the mayor's quest, you can hand in all the receipts here, but then the city will remain in complete disarray. You can also learn there's a thief operating in the city, and the archivist needs help.
A guy is sitting behind bars, asking for help. If you listen to him and talk to Orris, he'll ask you to deal with the problem. If you save him, you'll also get expensive drugs (you can choose which ones). You can kill him with poison, pouring it into the trash can at the entrance. To let him go, you can convince the police officer he's sick with Doctor 80. Or, approach the casino cashier and use the sabotage skill on the book on the table. You can also use this page to talk to the prosecutor for a different outcome. You can also get the guy who turned him in (the clerk, Irvin), to talk to him. He's on the second floor through the mayor's entrance (the guy in the white coat in the first room, standing near the table), or simply pay him a $500 fine.
You can also find a receipt the mayor needs on the chief there.
The thief is located near the Three Cards casino but runs away. To catch him, you need to approach him stealthily. Then, by stealing 40, you can find out that he's stealing because of his debts to Orris. Alternatively, you can simply turn him in to the police station. To "pay" the guy's debts, you need to steal a special pistol from the station (or look for the neon gangster on the global map near Vegas). You need stealth (not steal it, but get it from the iron locker near the police chief; if your stealth is poor, you can use combat mode) or complete the mayor's quest. This is the best laser pistol in the game. All the others (even the upgraded ones) are worse.
Robocop can't be repaired in the police department—it's just an Easter egg. After completing the main quest, a technician can upgrade the car.
Right by the entrance, there's a girl selling sandwiches. If you have 5 stamina, you can talk to her about the cart and offer to help (she needs scrap metal). If you question her, she'll mention problems you can solve with the mayor and a trade skill of 80. Or, if you've completed the mayor's quest, you won't need to trade. Trade is also unnecessary if you've already signed a Nuka-Cola supply contract with the Hard Rock Cafe. In that case, you can vouch for her yourself by telling the mayor.
There's an archivist at the mayor's office who's looking for his daughter. His daughter is with bikers in Battle Mountain.
You can chat with the Minister of Culture and even convince him that things aren't so bad in the wasteland if you have 65 erudition. You can also invite him to dinner for a chat to gain some more experience. The meeting place is in the casino, across from the bartender, in the evening. You need to wait at the neighboring location using the Pip-Boy until 8:00 PM and then return to "Clean City." The minister will be standing at the bar next to the Nuka-Cola machine.
The terminal next to the Minister of Culture will reward you with a Stimulant if you use Erudition (the distinctive narrow panel without a monitor next to the door).
Another receipt is from the mayor's assistant.
Near the precinct, there's a newspaper vending machine where you can buy skill-boosting books. One of each type costs $500 each.
At the casino entrance, there's a guy trying to collect a debt from a casino patron. The patron is in the restroom on the second floor. You can buy his debt, turn him in, or offer to remove his organ safely - you'll need a knife, painkillers, and a high Doctor skill (90). You can also take him out through the back door. Or you can simply steal the receipt.
Near the treadmill, there's a guy in a tinfoil hat. Chat with him, then visit his room. If you speak politely and tolerantly with him, your respect in the city will increase. Be sure to visit his room in the casino on the 3rd floor. You won't regret it.
On the second floor, near one of the stairs, there's a guy. If you rent a room, he'll tell you all sorts of interesting things and sell you drugs. He sells gambling items, both fair and unfair, and he also sells "comics" and "Cat's Paw" magazine (useful in SLS); their stock is periodically updated. He also sells a very rare book that increases the "Trade" skill. He can also teach the Gambling skill. Next to him in the room, on the wall, is a portrait. You can take it for yourself using the renovation :-)
In one of the rooms, there's a guy in a leather jacket, suffering (he's suffering because he drank beer at the casino bar, which was deliberately laced with drugs to discreetly hook users. This is one of the clues, but you can do without it). You need to use the Doctor skill on him, and then talk to him. You'll need an anti-smoker and a doctor 80. If you persuade him to do without drugs (the anti-smoker is one of them) to relieve the pain (break down), you'll get more experience and karma.
The "Atomic Cocktail" recipe can be found in the large room.
To reach Hal Wallace, you need level 8 and a bit of rudeness, or if you freed the prisoner in the BB, you can use his recommendation. Recording a conversation with him will give you all the necessary evidence. All that remains is to find the drug lab and hand it over to the mayor, but first you need to leave the clean city and talk to Inspector Callahan (if he survives, he'll give you a super stimulant after the quest). He'll still be there even if he's already been killed.
There are several ways to find the lab: you can talk to the slave trader, talk to the dealer near the Hard Rock Cafe and learn about the black caravan, or talk to the caravan drivers. Then you need to climb into the caravan drivers' wagon and you'll learn the lab's location. You can sneak in and find another receipt, but this is optional.
If you complete Hal Wallace's quest, he'll give you the task of stealing Bob Neil's pistol. There will be no more quests.
After completing the quest, you can exonerate the freaks (you already have all the evidence) and hand over the black caravan and the location of the nursery to the police.
Then you can hire the freaks at Hoover Dam (requires conversation or 70 Erudition). Larry Geller will reward you with the crafting of healing powders and stimulants.
Near the Three Cards Casino, on the lawn near the entrance, you can find the most powerful non-mechanical knife in the game, called "Gonzo Style," using a metal detector.
The Nursery:
You can enter the Nursery either by fighting, or by going around it from below and crawling through a hole in the fence. This way, you can stealthily reach the receipt. If you have food with you, one of the slaves (the one in the building) will tell you a little about the area.
Entering the office will increase your stealth skill regardless.
The receipt is in a desk in the farthest building. You can get information from a computer in another building with Erudition, but it's almost impossible to get there without a fight. You can go there after handing in the receipt to Meru or the police. The Nursery will be empty (most of the items in the tables and cabinets will also be missing). Except for one guard, who won't react unless attacked (if killed, he has an electric whip). You can also approach the computer with the information calmly, without a fight.
In the wooden house with the generator (which is next to the house with the computer), there's a "Large Set of Lockpicks" in an iron locker (they'll disappear if you tell the police about the Nursery). These lockpicks can open simple, medium, and complex mechanical locks (simple lockpicking +40%, medium lockpicking +35%, complex lockpicking +30%), unlike standard lockpicks, which only open simple and medium mechanical locks (simple lockpicking +20%, medium lockpicking +10%).
