Chapter 12. Surface Tension [Black Mesa]
12.1. Dam
At the exit, there's a military checkpoint. Shoot the explosive barrels to kill the soldiers more easily. Grab two batteries behind the booth on the left, and there's a first aid kit behind the net. Continue on. You can get two more batteries at the substation on the right.
We see a huge hydroelectric power station ahead. Land on the elevated area, take aim, and start killing the soldiers with a crossbow. Get closer to the dam, enter the warehouse on the right, restore your health with first aid kits, and grab some Tau cannon ammo.
Continue along the dam. A helicopter will appear on the horizon; you need to quickly run back to the warehouse. From the warehouse, shoot the helicopter with the Tau cannon; there should be enough ammo in the warehouse. Return to the dam and kill two more soldiers. Then jump into the water on the right. Be careful, there's a sea monster in the water!
We swim to the tall tower, climb the ladder, grab some Tau Cannon ammo inside, and pull the lever on the wall. Water has started to flow down through the dam's pipes. Jump into the water, swim into the pipe, and emerge on the underside of the dam. Walk through the shallows to the very end. Climb into the pipes on the left.
12.2. Gorge
We go straight along the gorge, at the end we climb two ladders, and recharge at the charger. We go down one ladder, then along a narrow parapet to another gorge. We climb up the ladder.
We will find ourselves on a sandy plain where many houndeyes are running around. We enter the tunnel on the left. Here you can go through a small door into the corridor and pick up a battery and two first aid kits. We exit outside through another door in the tunnel or through the side door in the corridor. Kill several soldiers. We enter tower number "2" and press the button on the panel. Tunnel "B" opens outside and a couple more soldiers appear. We proceed into the tunnel.
Along the way, we pick up a full supply of grenades. There is a mine ahead. Mines are very visible from afar; they can be shot at with bullets or thrown with grenades to defuse them. We go around the minefield on the left side, climb the mountain slope to the left, jump over the barbed wire from there, and descend into the bunker. We climb forward along two pipes.
12.3. Canyon
We emerge from the pipe and see a panoramic view of a mountain canyon with a river and various buildings around it. We find ourselves on a steep mountain slope. Carefully descend, first onto a cliff to the left, then to the right.
We go right along a narrow mountain path, killing soldiers along the way. Below, we see a metal structure with more soldiers walking around it; you can kill them with a scoped crossbow. There will be a cliff ahead. We kill the barnacle to get it out of the way and run and jump onto the metal fragment. Restore health at the wall-mounted first aid kit and charger.
We descend down the huge inclined pipe. At the bottom, continue right along the mountain path. We enter the weapons depot. We crawl under the lasers and knock over two machine gun turrets. We restore health at the first aid kit and charger, enter the small room, and grab the RPG rocket launcher.
As we exit the warehouse, a helicopter attacks. We run back and hide behind three green crates. The helicopter occasionally fires rockets and constantly fires machine gun bursts. When the machine gun burst ends, we get up from behind the crates and fire the rocket launcher at the helicopter, then hide again. Rockets are available for free; they spawn endlessly in the crate under the yellow sign next to the cliff. After five rocket hits, the helicopter will burst into flames, and after two more hits, it will explode and fall onto the rocks, clearing the way forward.
We go right along the path. Climb up the ladders and jump over the cliffs. At the end, we climb into the pipe; there's a headcrab in the way.
12.4. Military Base
We move along the pipes as far as possible; there are a lot of soldiers above, and we need to get past them all. We climb the stairs and emerge in a garage with cars. There's a tank in front of us. Jumping out from around the corner of the building, we shoot at the tank's turret first with missiles, then with grenades. After the tank is destroyed, you can kill the remaining soldiers. We enter the red booth, grab a couple of first aid kits, and press the button. We continue along the open road.
An armored personnel carrier with a machine gun will drive up ahead. We pelt it with the remaining grenades or with underbarrel grenades from the machine gun. There are missiles in a wooden crate nearby. We kill four more soldiers. To the right of the road there is a military tent where you can get ammo and first aid kits. We reach the end of the road, climb through the broken window, and press the button on the wall. We enter the opened doors.
12.5. Laser Room
We see a building ahead with numerous wires and a transformer. Kill the Vortigaunts that appear. We go around the building to the right, destroying the blue lasers from afar with bullets. We exit into the backyard, where a sniper is holed up in an upper window. Bullets won't kill him, so we throw a grenade directly into his window or fire a rocket. We enter the room and grab several grenades.
Clear the minefield in front of us with shots or grenades. Before the electric fence, we turn back and throw a grenade into the bunker on the top floor, where another sniper was located. We crawl under the fence, approach the transformer, and press the lever to the right of it. After that, we climb up the fallen tower to the roof. From the roof, we jump into the building through the breach.
Inside the building, we'll meet a scientist. Exit the room and see boxes of explosives and blue lasers ahead. You can't blow anything up here, or the whole building will explode! This is one of the most challenging areas in Black Mesa.
Run over the first laser (remember to press the "ctrl" key to bend your legs while jumping, which reduces the chance of hitting the laser). Climb over the boxes for the second laser, crawl under the third one, and drag a barrel to the fourth one, then jump off it. Jump over a couple more lasers and you'll find yourself in a large room filled to the brim with these blue lasers.
Approach the dead monster behind the bars and take the Hivehand weapon from him. Next, go to the right of the large container, climb onto the wooden crates, and go to the far wall, next to the missiles. Enter the room, exit on the other side, and climb to the second floor. We approach the elevator, break the wooden crate on it, then raise it by pressing the button. From the raised elevator, jump to the central platform where the dead monster lies. Press the button, and we go down on the central elevator.
Take the guard with us and continue along the tunnel to the left.
12.6. Arsenal
We emerge on the surface, where soldiers are fighting alien monsters. Kill everyone from afar, destroying the armored personnel carrier with a machine gun. We move forward, go around the building, and turn into the alley on the right. Here, a sniper is sitting in the nearest window above; throw a grenade or launch a rocket at him. We enter the building through the back doors, killing all the soldiers. We climb to the very top, where we meet another guard. He will let us into the weapons storage, where we can replenish ammunition for all types of weapons to the maximum.
We enter the far door of the storage room and exit outside on the 2nd floor. We jump to the other side of the street and climb up to the third floor. We enter the building and drop through the gap in the toilet. We move forward, killing the soldiers. We jump onto the broken staircase between floors, climb up, jump down to the far side of the floor, and enter the room. We drop down through the gap in the floor.
We'll fall into a dead-end tunnel. Here, we'll be attacked first by Vortigaunts, then by larger monsters. Run out of the tunnel and shoot down the cargo helicopter with two rocket shots. (If you don't shoot down the helicopter in time, it will constantly return, and more and more soldiers will be parachuted out of it.) Grab the first aid kit, move on, and kill two more large monsters.
Enter the next tunnel and recharge at the wall-mounted first aid kit and charger. Climb up to the second floor, where there's a rocket launcher (Tow). At this point, a tank will drive into the square; shoot it with the rocket launcher. You can only fire one shot, then manually drag the next shell to the launcher before firing again. You can also finish off the tank with your hand-held rocket launcher. After defeating it, go down and enter the tunnel the tank came from.
12.7. Multi-Story Parking
In the tunnel, approach the machine gun and shoot the Vortigaunts.
1st floor. Jump onto the alien trampoline in the center.
2nd floor. Climb the stairs between floors.
3rd floor. Exit through the breach and descend via the air conditioners.
Outside, climb the scaffolding into the red ventilation duct. Snarks have taken up residence inside; we fight them off and collect their nests like ammo.
From the vent, we fall into the auto repair shop. Kill four soldiers. Climb the car lift and jump across the cars to the far wall. Jump out the window from the side ledge onto the street.
Outside, shoot the barrels by the gate; they will be blown apart. Walk along the building. Use the trampoline to bounce up to the tower. In the courtyard. A war between Vortigaunts and Marines. There are a couple of turrets near the trenches; we can use them. Enter the gate. We pass through several security rooms.
12.8. Military Quarter
On a narrow street, people are fighting off aliens with a tank, but soon the alien aircraft will blow up the armored vehicles. We proceed along the cleared street. (If we're carrying a hat, leave it at the locked gate ahead.) There's a trampoline in the alley to the right; jump up it to the upper balcony.
On the top floor, we'll find several snark nests; take them with us. We climb out onto the roof along the balcony, where snipers will fire at us. We can immediately run to the closed hatch above. We need to cover ourselves with a barrel, turn the valve, and jump into the hatch. If we don't make it in time, run back, and the door with the zombies will open. We descend down the corridor to the balcony with rockets, eliminate the snipers, and climb back up to the hatch.
An ambush awaits us in the hatch. We see a soldier place explosives in a pipe and close it. We quickly return to the water, dive, and wait out the explosion.
We proceed along the first floor; below, marines are fighting zombies.
There's a red cauldron in the center; turn the valve. The second valve is missing; we'll find it in the side room. After that, we climb up and crawl through the pipe.
We'll reach a hangar with a plane and a helicopter. Kill or sneak past four soldiers. We escort the guard; he'll open the door for us.
We return to the narrow street with the destroyed tank. We kill the monsters that appear. We escort the guard to the checkpoint by the gate; he'll open the door for us.
12.9. Artillery Control
We escape from the huge blue monster through the tunnels. Run forward to the street and climb onto the tanker in the center. The monster will begin shaking the tanker, throwing us down. Approach the large screen, which shows an overhead view of this location. Mark the location of the huge monster with a dot, then press the colorless "fire" button at the bottom of the screen. The monster will die from an artillery shell.
Now we need to clear a path forward. On the screen, aim the artillery at the communication tower (it's northeast of our tanker, near the white fuel tanker), press the colorless button on the screen. Climb over the concrete fence along the fallen tower, turn the valve near the gate, and proceed through the tunnel. The chapter where they forget about us :)
