Diablo 2 Walkthrough -> Act 1
Quest 1 - Den of Evil
You'll receive this quest from Akara. The Den of Evil is a cave near Blood Moor. Kill everyone before entering the Den. This will give you a second or maybe even third level. Scour the Den and eliminate everyone:
Return to camp and let Akara know you've cleared the Lair. After that, go to Kassia - she'll give you the next quest.
Quest 2 - Sister's Burial Grounds
This will be the first long quest. First, head through the Blood Marshes again until you reach the Cold Plains. There are two exits: to the Burial Grounds and to the Stony Field.
There's also a cave there: this is the first opportunity to make a side quest for experience and loot. Do this before entering the Burial Grounds. A Raven is entrenched in these lands, and you must kill it.
It moves quickly and brings death to anyone of a low level; however, the cemetery has many places where you can confuse your tracks, so don't stand still if you need to heal. Don't worry about fighting her zombie army: once she dies, her death will destroy all the monsters in the graveyard:
After this, you'll see that you need to return to Cassia, but before that, you should stop by the Mausoleum and the Crypt. You'll find a lot of interesting things there. After this, return to Cassia, and after talking to her, talk to Akara.
Quest 3 - Search for Cain
You'll learn that Tristam (the city from the first Diablo) is now nothing more than a smoking hole in the ground, and that good old Decker Cain needs to be saved. Akara will tell you about this quest, which has two parts.
The first part involves obtaining the Scroll from the Tree of Infuss and bringing it to Akara for decryption:
The tree itself is located in Darkwoods. How do you get there? First, go through the Stony Fields, from there you'll reach the Underground Passages, which will lead you to Darkwoods. While in the Stony Fields, find the Cairn Stones.
You'll return here with the scrolls, and here you'll learn the order in which to decipher them. You should also find a Moldy Tome, which will give you the fourth quest. Be sure to activate the waypoints in the Stony Fields and Darkwoods, as you'll be returning here.
Activating the Cairn Stones will open a portal to Tristam:
Here, you'll save Kain by touching his feather. Kain will quickly disappear, leaving you to either return to the portal or clear this level first. You won't have to fight anyone except the cursed Griswol—he's strong, so be on your guard.
Don't forget to look for Wirt's savings hidden in his wooden leg—a small recompense for all the expenses of the first game. Return to town when you're done and grab Wirt's leg.
Quest 4 - Forgotten Tower
A musty tome told you about a tower that clearly needs a good cleaning. It seems an evil countess has taken over and is up to no good. You'll need to return to the Rocky Field and go through two levels of underground passage to reach Black Forest, which in turn adjoins Black Marsh. The tower is located there:
Regarding the Tower: the hardest part is probably getting to the first level. It's very easy to die there, so be prepared to run as fast as you can if things get that way. There are five levels in the tower, and the Countess is on the lowest. Kill her and head to town for the fifth quest.
In the middle of Black Marsh, there's a non-quest dungeon called The Hole in the Black Marsh; don't miss it.
Quest 5 - Tools of the Trade
After completing the fourth quest, you'll learn from Charsi about the Horadric Malus, a special hammer wielded by the villains of the Barracks. The Barracks are located quite far away, beyond Black Marsh, in the Tamoe Highland. Once there, find the monastery gates, enter, and head to the Outer Cloister.
There you'll find a waypoint and the Barracks. You'll have to work hard here; the enemies are strong, but you'll find the hammer itself and the freak guarding it:
Dust it off, then return to Charsi. She'll have a surprise for you: she'll magically imbue an item you give her (an Imbue Item). We recommend choosing a weapon.
Find the best weapon you can, but make sure it's not rare, non-magical, or inlaid with jewels, and give it to her. Don't give her armor, except maybe your boots or belt, as all other armor will be replaced in Act II.
However, if you receive a good magical weapon from Charsi, you can keep it for a long time. Don't rush to give Charsi an item for processing; you can do that later, after returning from another Act.
Quest 6 - Sister's to the Slaughter
The final quest introduces the vile bitch Andariel, who hides in the Cathedral cellars. The path to her will be your longest journey. Return to the Barracks and descend into the prison. After three levels, you'll find yourself in front of the Inner Cloister.
Through it, you'll enter the Cathedral, which leads to the Catacombs. Andariel is located on the fourth level of the Catacombs:
Make sure you've activated all the waypoints on the first level, in the prison, and on the second, in the outer monastery, and in the catacombs. If you're afraid of death, immediately after clearing the third level of the catacombs and before entering the fourth, create a portal to the city and leave it there.
Go to level 4 and prepare for a big fight. Don't be surprised if you die, as she's very angry and uses a brutal poison attack, but if you have a city portal, returning to your body will be very simple. Don't forget to cast another one before you go get your body. Once she's dead, go back to the city and talk to everyone about everything. Everyone loves you.
If you want to explore any areas, do so now. If you're ready, go to Wariv and tell him you're ready to head east. He'll set up camp for you, and you'll set off for Act II of Diablo 2.
