Chapter 5: On the Radar [Episode Two]


Machine Gun

After the victory, we head to the garage; the rebels promise to repair our car. Meanwhile, we need to clear the other side of the base, where the Combine have set up a powerful triple machine gun against the humans.

We climb the stairs and jump into a separate room. We knock down the boards from the windows and see a multitude of zombies wandering outside. We pick up circular saws and gas cylinders from the floor and throw them at the enemies through the windows. We climb out ourselves. In the far corner, we can jump on the cars and get ammo and first aid kits from the acid. On the right, we climb onto the truck and continue to the second floor.

From the building, we jump to the other side. We crawl under the fence, then through the drain pipe. From here, the machine gun is visible, so we need to move only crouching to avoid being shot. There's a whole car graveyard here in the clearing; they will provide cover. Zombies constantly appear around us; we ignore them; the machine guns will shoot them. But we must kill the crawling, legless zombies ourselves.

At the end of the first trench, there's a small, isolated turret. To defend ourselves, grab a barrel with the gravity gun and hold it in front of us. We approach and knock over the turret. All this time, keep our backs to the cars to avoid the machine guns.

A small house stands in the way, with two Combines holed up inside. Climb through the window and kill them. Another Combine is hiding behind another window.

Climb out the other window. We pass the second trench, climb into a white van at the end, and through it we reach the third trench. It leads right behind a building, where the machine guns can no longer reach us.

The building is locked, so we look for another way in. We climb onto the truck; in the back there's a chest with infinite grenades. From the truck's cab, we jump to the building's canopy and throw grenades into the second-floor windows.

We jump back into the building through the windows and finish off the remaining ones. There's also a chest with grenades here. We find a red panel on the side of the front wall, press the button, and throw a grenade into the opened device. This will detonate the machine gun control device, rendering them inoperable.

We exit into the street and head straight ahead, jumping over the scattered cars and picking off the remaining zombies. In the garage, we get into our upgraded car. We've been equipped with a radar to search for stashes left by the resistance. We continue on to Belaya Roshcha.


On the Road

We drive through the toxic puddles surrounding the base. To the right, there's a small dead end with two skeletons in a building, nothing more. Zombies will block our path; we can avoid wasting ammo on them and simply run them over with the car.

Secret 1: The first time the sensor goes off, it's near a white van right on the road. Another car is parked nearby; to take it out, we blow up the barrels. It's impossible to get inside the van, so use the gravity gun to grab the first aid kits and ammo.

Secret 2: At the intersection, we spot two stashes and head to the closest one. Climb through the van into the left building. The ammunition is behind a chain-link fence; to open the door, we need to climb to the second floor. But there's no ladder, so we'll have to build a catapult from improvised means. There's a chest nearby with infinite grenades, and in the center, there's a raised metal lid. We lower the lid with the gravity gun, throw a grenade under it, and stand on top of it. The explosion will lift the lid and send us flying. We press the switch, and behind the net below, we find a new weapon – a bazooka and rockets for it.

Secret 3. The stash is in the red, dilapidated building. We find a circular disk on the floor, pull it with the gravity gun, and break out a board with it. We break out several more boards from the floor, and from below, we find rockets, flares, and explosive barrels. Using all of this, we begin to fight off the attacking zombies.

We return to the road and enter an underground tunnel.

White Forest Inn

We drive along a flat section of road; the next tunnel is blocked. We turn left and climb the serpentine road to the top of the mountain. On the last stretch of road, we'll come to a secret.

Secret 4. To the left of the road, there's a fallen tree; we go behind it and discover a cave entrance. Inside, there's a small shelter with first aid kits and ammo.

At the top, there's a gas station and a couple of houses; below, there's a small village. (From a distance, we look down and see G-Man entering the hotel building.) We descend into the lowlands and arrive at the "White Forest Inn" hotel; the only way to enter is from the back.

As we pass the houses, force fields activate in front and behind, blocking the road. Alliance soldiers run toward us from the neighboring houses. We're trapped, but there's one way out, which G-Man just created for us: hide inside the multi-story hotel building.

We run through both floors and the basement, collecting weapons, first aid kits, and ammo. Enemies are on all sides, so we peer into every window one at a time and shoot back at the soldiers and hunters. The more we kill now, the fewer enemies will get inside. During the final wave, elite white soldiers and several hunters will attack.

Disabling the force field

During the battle, enemies will break down one of the doors, through which we exit outside. The wires from the force fields run upward, so we return to the higher ground on foot. The building near the gas station is now open, so we enter. The building has a control panel in the room to the right, but a machine gun turret is shooting through the corridor. We destroy it first by throwing a grenade through the force field. After that, Alyx will turn on the panel and let us into the central room.

In the center is a locked room with a generator; we can enter through the top. We climb to the higher ground on the opposite side, crawl along the pipes under the ceiling, and reach the roof of the room. We drop down to the dead end behind the force field, push aside the crates below, and there's a ventilation hatch behind them. We crawl into the room, open the doors, and use the gravity gun to knock the ball out of the generator.


Exit

We leave, return to the car, and continue driving. Beyond the hotel, the road is blocked by rubble, so we jump down the ramp.

Secret 5. As we exit the area, we spot the last cache; it's on the right behind some rocks. We move the rocks and find an arrow pointing upward. At the top of the rock, a basket with crates is suspended from a tree. Use the Gravity Gun to grab and throw rocks into the basket to drop the crates onto the road.


Near the base

We drive through a tunnel. The road is blocked, so we turn left across rough terrain. From here, the White Grove antenna is already visible; it's not far to go. We leave the car and climb over the gate on the elevated area to the left.

Just beyond the gate, we see a downed Alliance transport. A long-legged Strider will unpack from the transport and begin to attack us. Don't waste ammo; in a few moments, a mechanical Hound will jump on the Strider and destroy it.

The Hound will open the gate for us, we return to the car, and drive through. Alix suggests racing the robot to get to the base. Once Dog clears the transporter, we begin the race.

We drive along the canal, and when we see a fence, we turn right and drive to the right of it. Once we reach the hill, we turn right, then left, and that's it – we've reached the base entrance. Our mutual enemy awaits there.
