Several new areas and quests now exist in this small town.
Modoc Main Street
The shack and junk areas are part of Cold Hearts Farm.
You can mine some ore in the mine. You'll need tools from the nearby hut or the pickaxe the blacksmith gives you to use on the yellow veins in the mine. Once you have some ore, bring it back to the blacksmith in the Bed & Breakfast area, and he'll be able to craft something for you. (Metal armor, lockpicks, upgrades to your metal armor, shackles (purpose unknown). It takes him two days to complete each item.)
Find a way to connect Modoc and the Ghost Farm with an underground tunnel.
You need to explore the well before this quest becomes available. Talk to Joe at the store and suggest it. He'll like the idea and ask you to find someone for the job. A man named Maigret can be found in Redding, in the far right room of the Malamute Saloon. He'll offer his services as an experienced miner to dig a tunnel. It will cost $2,000, or $1,500 if you can convince him to lower the price. Some time later, you'll find him at the bottom of a well in Modoc. He'll tell you he needs four sticks of dynamite to finish the job. Once it's done, talk to Joe and receive a reward of 500xp, a double-barreled shotgun, and 20 rounds of ammunition.
Learn to make leather armor from Balthas.
If you rescue Johnny and show interest in leathercrafting, Baltas will give you a set of sewing supplies and teach you how to make leather jackets from regular gecko hides (Repair 30%+), leather armor from golden gecko hides (Repair 60%+), and Mk.II leather armor from mole rat hides (Repair 100%+).
Cold-Blooded
The entrance to the Cold-Blooded base is at the back of the Shack, where you'll meet a boy named Gareth and his dog. He'll tell you that his father has gone missing. Use the Oil Can found near the well on the hatch hinges, then use Repair several times to open it.
The cave below is full of traps and several enemies. Continue forward until you find another underground room that appears to be a dead end. Nearby, you'll see a large round stone. Use it (or blow it up, if you're not strong enough) to open a passage down to an even lower level with even more traps and enemies. Along the way, you'll find the boy's father's corpse and take the diary. Then you can tell the boy about his father's death and direct him to his aunt in Broken Hills.
Plant laughing gas on Salvatore. 100xp
It's as simple as it sounds. Find a way to see Salvatore, then use the Steal skill to plant laughing gas. If you take his oxygen tank, old Salvatore will soon die laughing.
Free Earthworm Jimmy from Redding. 200xp
Of course, Jimmy is being held in prison. Talk to him through the door and tell him you're going to destroy the wall. Outside, throw explosives between the two piles of rocks opposite the back wall to create an exit for him.
Steal some of Salvatore's weapons. 400xp
Head south from Modoc toward New Reno, and you'll see a location marked on your world map as if you were near the city. Meet up with Jimmy and a few of his men, then lead them to confront Salvatore's men inside the building. One of the crates in the building is lootable. Make sure you grab it and bring it back to Modoc. Loot: 400xp, 2 Laser Pistols, a Combat Shotgun, 2 Hunting Rifles, a Submachine Gun, and some Stimpaks .
Escort Jimmy to New Reno. No XP(!)
You'll be told to meet Jimmy somewhere between Modoc and New Reno, so head that way and wait for a chance encounter. He'll be hiding from Salvatore's guards and will tell you to report the situation back to base. After reporting to Fence, he'll become suspicious and refer you to Jack or English Bob for further work.
Note: If you were in the car when this encounter occurred, it will appear to be missing. Don't panic! As soon as you exit the area, the car will return.
Collect tribute from Tubby in Den.
Again, a fairly straightforward task. Threaten Tubby and take his money. Hinting that he wouldn't want anything to happen to the children would be a good way to get him to cooperate.
- 150xp if you kill a child.
- 200xp if you convince Tubby without killing the child.
Find the basement in Broken Hills. 100xp
All you need to do is enter the basement in Lydia's shop. If you're not on Jacob and Eileen's side, read Per's Fallout 2 walkthrough (currently only available in English) to learn how to access it from a conversation with Phil the bartender.
Find a basement in New Reno. 100xp
Enter Eldridge through the back door. Pass the barking dog, and behind the shelf is the basement. As Per's guide says, only one attempt per day. The dog will bark but won't attack, giving you plenty of time to enter before Eldridge comes in to investigate. Simply entering is sufficient; talking to Algernon isn't necessary.
Poison one of Tubby's children. 100xp
English Bob tasks you with poisoning Tubby's child and gives you a card with a skull and a poisoned lollipop. Keep only the lollipop in your inventory, then walk past the little thief near Tubby's. If one of them doesn't steal the lollipop, you can give it to the child during a conversation. After the thief dies, place the card with the skull on the corpse. If you tell English Bob you don't want to kill children (or you decide not to do any other work for him), he will poison you.
Kill a drug addict in New Reno. 100xp
The drug addict English Bob wants revenge on is standing at the end of the alley east of Desperado. Agree to go with him to a safe place and give him the poisoned drug.
Silently eliminate Mickey in Broken Hills. 200xp
After receiving the quest, obtain a grenade, spear, and dynamite. Speak with Typhon in the old ghoul's house on the east side of town. Bring him all the items he asks for to learn about the treasure, then send Mickey down the well (this part works just like in classic F2). After you collect the worthless bottle caps and Mickey is trapped in the well, check the well again with the dynamite or grenade in your inventory. You can then throw either of these items down to kill Mickey.
Steal from a safe in Redding.
The safe is in Ascorti's Ace, behind a door with two guards. To get there, go through the caves, north of the well behind the prison, and up the stairs to the room next to it; the safe is opposite the bed. You'll need to use explosives to crack it. 300xp and $1800 after the Coldhearts take their 10% cut. (Actually, I cracked the safe with the Advanced Lockpick Set and a 100% Lockpicking skill, but I didn't get any experience, even from using my Lockpicking skill, and the safe only had $1000. The Coldhearts gave me 300xp after I told them I'd completed the task, and they said they'd take their 10%, but I didn't check whether they took $180 or $100 because I had plenty of money, and even if I didn't, it's only an $80 difference.)
Gain Metzger's loyalty. 200xp
Go to Westin's Ranch in the NCR and talk to the Robed Man. You'll find out it's Metzger's mother. Knock her out, then take her body and go to Den. Have dynamite with you. Talk to Metzger, show him his mother, and "make a deal" with him. Report your success to English Bob.
Obviously, Metzger shouldn't be killed when you free Vic.
Protect Cold Hearts from English Bob. 2000xp
Fence will ask you to keep an eye on English Bob. Bob will start to leave, so you'll have to talk to him. He'll ask for your cooperation against Fence. If you agree, you'll meet with Salvatore's man. With him, you'll attack Fence and bury him alive. If you refuse Bob's offer, leave the Coldhearts farm and you'll also meet with Salvatore's man. Go and kill Bob. Return to Fence and receive 2000xp + full access to the vault.
