Important Note: If you infiltrate the base peacefully, four new quests await you. The first two are related and involve obtaining your own vertibird. This is a bit confusing. There are several ways to do this.
First, talk to the vertibird guard standing across from the hangar. This is the first step, no matter which path you choose. This is the most important! Don't kill him before you've spoken to him, and let the vertibird land. He won't become hostile like the others at the base. If you kill him before the vertibird arrives, you won't be able to get the vertibird or the flying lessons.
Once the vertibird has landed, you have several options. One of the most peaceful and interesting is this one:
A:
- Talk to the vertibird guard and the vertibird will land.
- Talk to Maria about the vertibirds, she will mention Fassard.
- Go to Broken Hills and talk to Fassard about training. He'll teach you if you mention Maria.
- Or go back to Navarro and pick up the order form from Dr. Schreber's desk (if you haven't already), then talk to Maria and show her the form. She'll ask where you got it and become hostile if you give the wrong answer. Then she'll tell you to show the form to the vertibird guard.
- Do as Maria tells you, and you can take the vertibird anytime you need it.
Talk to Maria. She'll be standing in the room on the far left, in the building with the kitchen. You'll need to be wearing Power Armor to talk to her. If you have trouble talking to her while she's working, just wait until she stops for a moment. Maria will tell you about vertibirds and Anthony Fassard. Do this before showing her the order form, as the option to ask her about it will disappear from the dialogue afterward.
You can pester her with questions about your relationship with the Sergeant, and she'll make you clean toilets. You'll receive a pair of rubber boots, rubber gloves, and a box of Cheezy Poofs. Don't threaten her, as the soldiers at the base will attack you, not her, so you might not be able to replace her right away.
If you go in fully armed, or if you get the wrong person, or if you can't talk to Maria about the vertibirds, then you have two other ways to get information about the vertibirds.
B:
- Talk to the vertibird guard and the vertibird will land.
- Take the order form and show it to Maria.
- Give the order form to the vertibird guard.
- Go to Broken Hills and talk to Fassard about training.
- Go back and take the vertibird.
C:
- Talk to the vertibird guard and the vertibird will land.
- Kill Maria, or the sentry vertibird, or both if you want.
- Go to Broken Hills and talk to Fassard about training. Tell him you cleared out Navarro.
- Go back and take the vertibird.
If you heal Cooky the Chef's eyes, he'll tell you about the Enclave, vertibirds, and Anthony Fassard, but not until you've cleared out everyone in the base. You can simply kill everyone first if you want to go that route, just don't kill Cooky! He can also occasionally give you flamethrower fuel (regular or advanced) even if you don't have a vertibird. You can heal his eyes even if you choose the peaceful route, but he won't tell you much until you've cleared out the base. Cooky can't give you Fassard's quest or make him teach you anything, but he's important to the story and will at least tell you that you need a pilot and about Fassard.
Find EUSAF pilot Anthony Fassard. 5000xp + Vertibird pilot training.
He can be found in the Broken Hills bar, a guy in savage clothing. Before he helps you, you need to figure out who he is. The dialogue is a bit tricky:
- 2,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1 (buy him a drink)
- then 2,1,2,3,1, any answer 1 or 2 or 5, then 3, this is only the first part, you don't have to start over if you fail.
- Then 4, 4, 5, 3... then 1, 3, then any of the three to exit the dialogue. Then talk to him one last time and choose option 4. You can't talk to him one last time until you have Maria's "Find Fassard" quest or until you've killed the guard.
This quest will appear in your quest list if you talk to Maria, but you still get 5000xp if you do it one of the other two ways.
Get access to Vertibird 1000xp
Get the chemical order form from Dr. Schreber's desk so you can tell Maria about it. (The doctor is in a soundproof room, so just kill him if he complains about you messing with his desk.) Give the form to the guard and convince him it's a request. The vertibird must be there before you talk to Maria, otherwise you'll need to go and talk to her again (the dialogue option for the guard won't appear otherwise). Completing this quest makes the vertibird accessible without attacking the guard, so once you've learned how to control the vertibird from Fassard, you can fly away in the vertibird. Be warned, you'll be attacked back at the base if you return.
Find the crashed Vertibird near Klamath. 300xp
Talk to Drill Sergeant Dornan while he's pacing around, and he'll tell you to find the crashed vertibird. Go to Klamath Canyon and retrieve the black box and the Toxic Caves map (after examining the crashed vertibird), then return and give them to Maria. To upload the data to the Pip-Boy, you need a Repair skill of 21% or higher. (40% gives you a 1 in 5 chance, so keep trying as many times as necessary.)
Enter the Toxic Caves warehouse. 1500xp + Advanced Power Armor
Maria wants you to go to the warehouse in the Toxic Caves (you haven't taken the elevator down there yet, have you?). She gives you an access key and sends three Enclave soldiers with you. They'll be waiting for you at the gas station. Kill the six security bots and return to Maria for your reward.
