Arcanum Walkthrough -> Character Selection
To begin the game, you need to choose who you'll play as. The choice is quite large: Humans, Dwarves, Ogres, Elves, Half-Elves, Halflings, and Orcs:
Humans are the most common race in Arcanum. They are treated very decently. There are no bonuses or disadvantages for humans in Arcanum, and they have no predisposition to technology or magic. They get along well with other races. Generally, humans are a good choice for beginners.
Dwarves are natural-born traders and technologists. Playing as a dwarf is not easy, as they don't get along well with some races, and you also need to buy small items for them.
Ogres are the strongest race. They can carry very heavy items, but there is one small problem: since they are large, they need to find or buy appropriate items. Ogres are the stupidest race in Arcanum.
Elves are the most magical race. They are naturally predisposed to it. Elves act arrogantly towards other races. They also simply hate technology.
Half-elves are kinder than elves; they get along well with all races. Like elves, they have a predisposition to magic.
Halflings are the smallest race. They are very smart and intelligent, but not strong and require little armor.
Orcs are not a very attractive race, and they are also very stupid. People dislike them for this reason. Orcs are good in hand-to-hand combat.
