Half-Life: Alex | Chapter 2: Quarantine Zone
You've just met Russell, who supplied you with a pistol and a pair of gravity gloves, and now you're heading to City 17 in pursuit of Eli's father.
You'll find yourself in a moving train car that will soon stop. Sit in the car for a few minutes while Russell briefs you. Once the train stops, exit the car onto the gravel. Immediately turn right, where you'll see a dead zombie. You can pick up the helmet next to the dead zombie and put it on if you wish.
Helmets and face masks will provide you with a modicum of protection from headcrabs, which will rake them off your head rather than harm you, so they are definitely worth picking up and wearing.
Jump onto the platform and turn left. Follow the path to the next dead zombie, who will be leaning against a fenced door. The crate nearby contains one unit of Resin. You use Resin to upgrade your weapons at weapon upgrade stations scattered throughout the game, so it's worth picking up any Resin you find. Pick up this Resin and place it on your back, just like you did with the ammo clip.
You can also check the amount of resin you're carrying by holstering your weapon. You can holster your weapon by pressing the analog stick or your main hand's thumb until the weapon wheel appears, then aim your controller at the hand icon and release. This also switches between weapons.
Press the analog stick to quickly switch between weapons. There's some ammo hidden on the ground next to a crate of resin. The next crate, hidden in a cardboard box, contains more ammo. Move the box to collect it. Shoot the lock to open the door, then move the corpse out of the way and continue forward.
At the end of the next room, open the equipment menu to equip your multi-tool. Press its end against the glowing red and white sensor on the left side of the wall and connect the power circuit to open the door. Make sure the power is connected in the following order:
You'll then find a medical station. Pull the handle on the machine, then place your hand on the panel to heal yourself. You haven't taken any damage yet, but it's worth learning how it works beforehand. Turn left and continue down the hallway. The Resin is on a crate, on top of a nearby shelf.
In the next room, grab one of the barrels blocking the doorway with both hands and throw it aside to clear the way. Shoot the lock and continue forward. You'll enter a small room with several crates and a monster on the ceiling. The Resin will be behind the grate to your left. There's also Resin under the crate to your right as you enter the room. A clip of ammo will be on the box in front of you. After you shoot and kill the sucker on the ceiling, another pistol clip will drop from it.
Kill the grappler and push the boxes aside to clear the area, then teleport down to pass by. In the next hallway, the Resin will be behind the fence to your right. Continue down the stairs and shoot the next grappler. It will drop the Resin upon death. The next group of grapplers will drop several pistol clips, so it's worth killing them all. Behind them is a train car with a dead zombie clutching the Resin. Pass the grapplers and emerge into the open space. Not much happens here, but there are several useful items hidden throughout the area.
You can find some ammo on the nearby zombie corpse. Resin is inside the pipes to your right. There's also some behind the wooden table if you turn into the tunnel to the left of the one you just exited. A pistol clip is inside a nearby jug. Resin is right behind the pot where you found the pistol clip. There's also some resin inside a container to the right of the gate.
You can also find some resin on a zombie corpse lying on a concrete barrier. Grab the corpse and move it to reveal the resin. Climb the steps on the left side of the area you're on and pick up the resin on the ground between the oil tank and the wooden box.
Move to the far end of the platform on the left side of the area and pick up the Resin inside the open cardboard box. Reach the giant arched gate, and a dialogue between you and Russell will begin. From here, turn right and climb the stairs along the checkpoint building. The Resin will be inside a crate as you climb the stairs. Place the box near the window with the dead zombie hanging out, then climb onto it and teleport inside. The zombie corpse hanging out of the window contains a pistol clip.
Once inside the building, you have several options. Your goal is to deal with the machine that opens the door, but you can also find several useful items and a container to open. Unfortunately, you won't be able to turn on the machine without the battery, which you'll find inside the container.
Use your multi-tool to open the nearby container. Press it against the sensor on the container and press the start button on your main controller to begin the puzzle. To solve the puzzle, manipulate the two blue dots to connect them in one spot. You'll fail the challenge if you touch the red dot while manipulating the blue dot, but you can bypass them. The pistol clip is inside the container.
The battery required to operate the device is located inside the container. You can't store these batteries on your back, but you can place them in storage slots on your left and right wrists. These slots allow you to carry batteries, grenades, and healing syringes when you don't have enough space in your hands. The medical station is located near the back wall, directly across from the container and to the right of the device that opens the gate.
Touch the multi-tool to the sensor in the lower left corner of the device, and it will open. Grasp the handle on the first wheel at the far left and insert the battery into the housing. Align the next two wheels until the laser passes through to the opposite side. Each of the red indicators on the right control panel will turn blue. The giant door will open, and you can enter. But first, you might want to check the opposite side of the house for any useful items you missed.
The resin is in the bottom drawer of the adjacent crate if you go left from the building entrance. Two pistol clips are on a table in the small room opposite the building entrance. The resin is inside a bucket if you turn left after picking up the two pistol clips on the table.
Exit the building and return to the gate. You'll see xenobiological structures lining the wall, ceiling, and floor. Continue forward. There's another clip in the open yellow crate. Open the door and proceed to the next room. On the table to your left will be a clip and a syringe. Proceed to the next room, where you must shoot the sucker and encounter a live headcrab zombie for the first time. If you kill the sucker, it will drop some resin. Shoot the lock, kill the zombie, and pick up the pistol clip from its corpse.
Enter the train car to your right and pick up the resin hidden in the corner. Turn around and walk counterclockwise around the train, facing you, with the doors closed. Pass under the bridge and deal with the nearby suction cups blocking the stairs. Once inside the train car, you'll find a crate of resin, a gas mask, and a ladder. Climb the ladder to board the train. You'll find several explosive gas canisters and plenty of suction cups. You can use your gravity gloves to feed the canisters to the suction cups, then shoot them to kill the enemies with an explosion.
Head to the opposite side of the train car and jump through the hole in the ceiling to get inside. You'll immediately encounter a zombie, which you can shoot through the window before it reaches you. Proceed through the train car and pull the metal rod to open the door and enter. Fight more headcrab zombies as you make your way down the corridor to the opposite end of the train car.
Remove the wooden planks from the doorway, then continue fighting the new zombies. Keep in mind that the zombies are slow, but can take a few shots before dying. They can also throw objects at you, causing damage. It's best to shoot them in the head until they die and fall off, or shoot the green pustules growing on their arms and legs. Sometimes headcrabs survive even if the zombie humans die, so make sure you kill them both.
Check the next room to find a magazine and some Resin stored in the nearby lockers. Also, search the yellow crate, which can be opened by grabbing and pulling the latches. You'll also find a weapon upgrade station. To solve the puzzle where you're trying to unlock the weapon upgrade station, you'll need to manipulate the glowing blue holographic orb with the multi-tool until it's positioned where each beam passes through a red dot:
When you're ready to upgrade, simply place the pistol in the pistol-shaped slot, select an upgrade by pressing the corresponding button on the panel with your virtual finger, and then retrieve the resin from your backpack. To do so, reach behind your back and grab it, then insert your resin into the appropriate slots. The machine will automatically begin upgrading your pistol with the selected upgrade. Take your upgraded pistol.
You can use the nearby health station on the wall if you're low on health. Note that each health station you find has a corresponding larva nearby.
Return to the main passage when you're ready and shoot the zombies approaching you. You'll find some resin on one of the nearby seats and a pistol clip on a nearby corpse. You can use the nearby explosive canister to deal with the zombies. Turn left at the next train car opening, then turn right (killing the zombies inside) and unlock the door by reaching through the broken window and pulling the pin out. Slide the doors open and proceed through the next train car.
Once you're outside, turn right to find a hidden case containing a Grappler, Resin, and several pistol magazines. On the opposite side is a doorway blocked by wooden planks. Tear them down (or shoot them if you don't mind wasting ammo) and continue down the next corridor. Ignore the lone headcrab that drops out of the vent, then grab and push aside the trash can in your path and proceed through the next door.
The best way to kill the headcrab in the next room is to crouch next to the hatch, shoot it through the hole, and then teleport there. In the next room, you'll also find some pistol clips and a medical syringe. There's also a Resin hidden in a drawer on a nearby table. Simply continue through the open doorways until you reach a hallway with a tire and a closed garage door. You'll know you're in the right place when you see a loading screen.
Open the garage door with the wheel with one hand, then teleport with the other before the door closes again. There's some Resin on the shelf to the left, and a pistol magazine behind the sleeping bag. Shoot the office window to the right (after the zombies crawl through) and teleport inside to find some Resin in the drawer under the computer, as well as a pistol magazine and a grub on the shelf. This leads to the nearby medical station.
Continue along the main path until you see a pile of cardboard floating in the air in the shape of a giant eye. Go into the room to your right and find two Resins hidden in a crate and on a shelf. In the next room, you'll see a closed door, a blue box, and a giant mural.
Go forward onto the platform to open the cage underneath. You can release another floating pile of cardboard, which will also take the shape of an eye. By looking at the location of the eye, you'll know which mural has the correct button press configuration. But if you can't find it, it's right in the upper left corner of the Black Mesa mural. Or, you can simply press the buttons in the following order:
Go through the door after it opens and continue down the hallway. Teleport across the tracks as soon as you reach them, then ring the bell at the end of the passage. You'll find yourself face to face with a living, breathing Vortigon. Speak with it. You'll be informed of your next steps, then continue down the sewer pipes until you reach the next level.
