Half-Life: Alex | Chapter 5: North Star
You find yourself in the basement of the North Star Hotel. Your mission is to reach the top of the hotel and destroy the Combine substation connecting to the Vault.
Turn around, and immediately ahead of you will be a set of document storage boxes. Inside, on the bottom right, is some Resin. Turn right into the foyer, and you'll see a headcrab-like dog for the first time, shutting down the power. It will walk down the elevator shaft in front of you and cut off the power nearby, forcing you to find an alternative power source to restart the elevator. Shoot the sucker in the foyer with your pistol.
In the main dining room, you'll encounter a zombie and a crab that has escaped from the bar in the far left corner of the room. Kill them, then grab the shotgun shells from the piano on the opposite (right) side of the room. Return to the bar and find two Resins and a Battery hidden inside.
Returning from the bar, turn right and open the door to the maintenance room. You'll immediately see a battery compartment and a locked container. On the first shelf on the right as you walk through the door is a box of resin. Directly across from it, on the opposite wall, is a shelf containing two more resins. The fourth resin can be found in this room inside a nearby document storage drawer. The locked container contains a grenade.
Insert the battery into the battery compartment, then activate the sensor in the nearby electrical cabinet. Follow the wire along the wall using a multi-tool and switch the circuits in the following order:
Now return to the dining room and head to the foyer. You'll find another sensor next to the door you originally entered the foyer through at the beginning of the level. Activate it with your multi-tool and follow it along the doorway. Climb onto the nearby crate if you can't reach the top of the doorway. Follow the conduit to another junction box inside the mural-covered wall. Pick up the painting and complete the circuit:
Press the red button to activate the elevator. You'll discover it's completely out of order. Well, time to find another way up. Luckily, there are several ladders in the elevator shaft you can climb. Climb up, then teleport through the open elevator door.
Head right and through the door into the overgrown kitchen. There are several Resins in this room. One is on the table directly in front of you, and another is inside the cabinet. There's also a crate of shotgun shells in this room.
Proceed through the hotel and find a locker room with ammo in the second locker on your right, as well as some Resin in one of the lockers closer to the door on the opposite side of the room. Be careful, because there's a Bluther right behind the next door. These are explosive green pustules that will explode if you stand near them for too long. If you shoot them but don't cause them to explode, they'll regenerate after a few seconds. The best strategy for getting rid of these blobsters is to kill them from a distance, using explosives or shooting them until they explode.
Once you've cleared the bubbles in the next room, grab the resin from the shower to your left. Continue forward and you'll find the hotel manager in a predicament. Pass him, and you'll find the resin on the bottom shelf of a nearby dresser.
You'll find yourself in the main corridor, where you can teleport down one floor. Do so and turn around. Kill the bubbles and pick up the Resin conveniently located in the nest. Then, go through the open doorway to the right of where you jumped down. You'll find another Resin lying on a chair in front of you.
Continue forward and you'll find another section of the hallway with suction cups. Don't shoot them yet, but teleport to the next floor below. Turn around and enter a dimly lit room with a staircase leading down and a supply cabinet on the left. Find some Resin in the storage room, then turn around and move forward until you find your first Xen Grenade Dispenser. Xen Grenade Dispensers are tricky to pick up—you need to time your grabs just right, otherwise the Xen will be torn from your hand. It's like trying to kill a fly, but a little easier.
Xen Grenades work the same as regular grenades, although they're slightly weaker and spawn infinitely from Xen Grenade Dispensers. Get as many as you need, and be sure to use them to clear out any suckers you've seen so far. Just behind the grenade dispenser are a couple more Resin Canisters and a few clips of pistol ammo.
Go down the stairs to the kitchen to meet your old friend, the Lightning Dog who disabled the elevator earlier. She'll escape into the vent. Enter the door on the right and stop by the laundry basket against the left wall to grab the Resin.
Continue down the hallway and you'll lose Russell's signal. The next laundry basket (containing a bunch of chemicals) has some ammo and a medical syringe at the bottom. Reach the door at the end of the hallway, where you'll notice a battery compartment. Turn left into the laundry room and begin the fight with the lightning dog.
Follow her into the closet and shoot her until she closes the door. Search the nearby drawers to find some resin, then return to the laundry room and track down the dog. Kill it with a shotgun if you have any ammo left, then pick up the remains of the dog.
If you need healing, the medical station is nearby, and its larva is stored in a slightly ajar elevator door on one of the stairwells. Place the reversible in the battery compartment you passed earlier.
At the beginning of the next area, you'll find yourself in a room with a locked door. Directly behind you is a Resin hidden behind some barrels. Open the door by using your multi-tool and solving the puzzle. Proceed to the next area, where you'll immediately see a Xen Grenade Launcher and a zombie headcrab. After killing the zombie and before turning left, grab the Resin from the shelf to your right.
As you emerge onto the path, you'll pass a hanging zombie corpse with a grenade on it. Taking the grenade will cause the corpse to fall into a pit. Don't look down! Continue along the path, and you'll eventually enter a small room with an open (overgrown) ventilation shaft and resin inside.
After going through the next door, turn left, stopping to grab some Resin from the table below. Follow the path down and drop down onto the barrels on the floor below. Turn around and follow the path to the ramp, then teleport to the next floor. Kill the suckers in front of you and the zombies below, then go through the next door.
Kill the poison headcrabs in the next room, then inspect the supplies. There's an ammo crate nearby and some resin on a table by the far wall. Exit the room, then teleport down another floor. You should now be on the first floor with a bunch of zombies and headcrabs that will rush you. There are also crates on the ground containing healing syringes, ammo, and one resin. There's also a crate of resin on one of the shelves. Nearby, there's at least one locked container containing three pistol clips and a healing syringe.
Walk around until you find a staircase leading down into a room. Go down the stairs, turn left, and come face to face with another Lightning Hound. This time, it will possess a nearby corpse, creating a zombie.
Shoot the glowing blue pustules coming out of the zombie's hands and head until it dies, then kill the dog. You can enter the room where the corpse was by walking along the bars to the door locked with a pin. Take the pin and pull it out, then go inside. Resin, ammo, and a syringe are on the table nearby. Reach the nearby vents and pick up more Resin.
Return to the main area and you'll encounter another dog, again controlling a corpse. Kill them both while avoiding their electrical attacks. Search their remains. Insert the item you found into the machine next to the transport elevators, then press the button at the end of the bridge to activate the elevator. Pull the handle to enter the elevator, then press the blue button to ascend.
Once at the top, lift the handle with one hand and teleport outside with the other. You'll now be on a winding path outside the Northern Star Hotel. Walk to the end of the path and solve the door puzzle to enter the room with the weapon upgrade station.
Solution for the weapon upgrade station:
When you're ready, drop down the hole in the floor and continue back through the hotel rooms. Take the first hallway and turn left again. You'll have to fight several enemies. In one of the adjacent bathrooms, a zombie corpse is hunched over a pool of tar. There's also ammo in the nearby cabinets. Jump through the open doorway and continue along the ramp to reach the next area.
Follow the corridor until you turn a corner. Poisonous enemies will jump out in front of you and explode. Back away and block their path with various objects.
In the next room, you'll be able to pick up some Xen Grenades. Grab as many as you need, then continue down the hallway. Soon, you'll come to the same stairwell where you started the chapter, although you'll be much higher up. Continue up the stairs until you reach the bedroom. Check the drawers. You'll find three Resins and some extra ammo.
There's a medical syringe in the bathroom. Break the window at the far end of the room and teleport to the other side. Turn right, then open the window of the adjacent hotel room. Grab the grenade from the table, activate it, and throw it at the group of zombies blocking the exit.
Once they're dead, teleport into the room. A fourth zombie will emerge from the restroom to your right. Kill it, then exit the door and continue up the stairs. Kill the enemies along the way and grab the Resin at the very top of the stairs. Remove the luggage from the blocked door and enter a long, dark corridor with poisonous headcrabs crawling along the walls.
Go through the door in the far right corner of the hallway, then drop down to the room below. Find some Resin on the nearby shelf in the same room. There's also a pistol magazine nearby. Exit into the hallway and go through the slightly ajar door at the end.
You'll find yourself in a hallway with poisonous crabs scurrying along the walls, ceiling, and floor below you. Walk forward a bit, and a poisonous crab will jump out of the restroom. Kill it and the suckers that are in your way. Soon, you'll find another grenade machine. Take as many grenades as you need, but any headcrabs you kill will respawn.
There's another Resin at the bottom of the stairs. Climb the stairs to the next floor, then teleport across the platforms to the ramp on the other side. Below the ramp are a couple of syringes and some Resin. At the top of the ramp, you'll reach a dead end in front of a large blue Combine sign.
At this point, you'll need to return to the stairs and backtrack to where you found the grenade machine a few minutes ago. From there, teleport to the first floor (yes, the same floor where all the headcrabs are scurrying) and immediately run to the door on your left.
As soon as you enter, close the door behind you to prevent the poisonous headcrabs from getting in. Take your time, look around, and you'll quickly discover that this room is a treasure trove. The nearby crate contains an SMG, an invaluable automatic weapon that will help you through the game. Collect the ammo and syringes; there's a grenade on the table. Don't waste any ammo on the headcrabs behind the door.
Jump over the crate where you found the SMG and kill the zombies on the other side of the fence. The locked container in front of you contains plenty of ammo for your new SMG. Shoot the lock on the door and proceed to the next room. Inside, you'll find SMG ammo and a power cutoff switch in a nearby electrical cabinet.
Turning off the power will disable the blue shield you encountered earlier, but it will also turn off the electric lights between you and the top floor of the North Star. However, you won't have to trudge through all those hordes of headcrabs in the dark, as your flashlight will automatically turn on.
Once you open the door to the room where you found the SMG, dash straight to the elevator shaft with the ladder inside. Climb the ladder and you'll find yourself back where you started. Fight your way through the headcrabs and dash back to the stairwell, returning to the top floor. You won't be able to use the ramp this time, so teleport to the wooden platform in the open elevator shaft and climb the ladder to the top floor. Teleport back to the elevator roof and continue on your way.
Make a final dash through the upper floor, shooting every poisonous crab that appears along the way. Just beyond the Combine's now-deactivated shield is an activated medical station. Stop, replenish your health, and continue forward.
The next corridor contains several nooks and crannies with ammo. Eventually, you'll come to a broken pool table and several locked containers next to it. Open them to get a generous supply of ammo.
In the next corridor, you'll come to a battery installation site and a ladder. At the bottom of the ladder, there's a locked container with a pistol and a closed door that needs to be opened. To do this, head back up the ladder and then teleport to the floor below.
You'll find yourself in a circular room with several zombies attacking you from all sides, as well as two zombies controlled by dogs. Kill them, then loot the dogs' corpses. Be sure to check every room, as several Resins are hidden there.
Their location:
Activate the two Combine battery sockets on the lower floor, then proceed through the previously locked doorway up the stairs to the main floor. To the left of the battery socket on the first floor is a passage that leads to an opening on the lower floor, where you can use the Gravity Gloves to grab the Reverie from the floor below.
Take the reverie and insert it into the battery compartment on the floor. The door behind you will open, revealing a room with a corridor full of supplies and a section of floor you can fall into.
Continue through the door to the next area, which has a medical station and a locked container. The locked container contains the appropriate grub and ammo. Heal yourself if needed, then continue along the path outside to the substation.
Your mission now is to disconnect the substation from the power lines. On the substation balcony is a machine with a handle that controls the power line connection to the substation itself. Turn the handle to point at any of the five yellow indicators until it turns blue, indicating that the corresponding connection for that indicator will open when you lift the handle.
Half-Life: Alyx 100% Walkthrough
When you're ready to destroy the connection, hold the handle and shoot the red glass chamber that opens until it explodes, destroying the connection to the substation. Do this five times until the substation is disabled.
Go to the substation and unlock the unlocked box, freeing Vortigon's ally. After the dialogue with Vortigon ends, he'll send you down the elevator.
Be prepared to be ambushed by a squad of Combine soldiers within seconds. Ammo, syringes, and grenades are found nearby, hidden inside bus stops and in the backseats of cars, so make the most of these tactical resources while you seek cover.
Once the battle is over, head to the large barricade where the Combine attacked you, then circle the wall on the left until you reach a flight of stairs in the alley. Jump onto the container below to reach the next area. The container also contains Resin.
Fight your way through squads of Combine soldiers as you make your way through the courtyard, picking up ammo and health syringes along the way. At the opposite end of the courtyard is an open door, as well as a chest of drawers with Resin on the bottom shelf.
The door will lead you to a staircase. At the bottom of the staircase is a pistol with ammo and some resin. Follow the staircase back until you see a mine. You can disarm it with your multi-tool or detonate it by throwing any object.
Disarming mines with the multi-tool in Half-Life: Alyx is as simple as moving the blue sphere through a series of hoops to a blue outline-shaped endpoint.
Continue up the stairs and you'll find some resin in an open yellow tub next to some pistol magazines. Around the corner, you'll find more mines, which you can dispose of as you wish. The door on the left will lead you to a room where another Combine squad is firing. Shoot the soldiers before they enter the room, then shoot the canister next to the Combine soldiers. Grab the resin from the top cabinet in the kitchen.
From the kitchen, you'll reach the top of a collapsed ramp and teleport across the road to the patio below. Immediately behind you when you land, there's some Resin on the patio table. Once inside, head to the kitchen (to your left) and search the drawers to find syringes and more Resin. There's also some Shotgun Shells in the freezer and the top cabinet.
Deal with the mines in the next room. Teleport across the street to find yourself in a firefight between Combine soldiers and headcrabs. To your left (in the bathroom cabinet) is a syringe. Clear the apartment of enemies and search the drawers and cabinets for ammunition and syringes.
You'll find a ladder nearby. At the bottom of the stairwell are several Poison Head Crabs, Resin, and some Shotgun Shells. Return to the top of the ladder to reach a hallway with a mine. Carefully move the box to avoid triggering the mine, then dismantle it with the multi-tool. The crate on the far side of the room contains a pistol magazine and Resin.
Open the door and disarm the mine. Go through the room to the roof. Turn right and go into another empty apartment. Inside one of the crates is some resin.
Return to the roof and turn right into the alley. Follow it to the next building. The next room will contain a pile of boxes and several doors. Go through the doors and you'll find yourself in another room with boxes. Go to the far end of the room. There's some Resin behind the mannequin.
Jump down. We're in the arms race.
