Half-Life 2: The Citizen (mod)

The Citizen is a modification for Half-Life 2, the plot of which revolves around a citizen who joins the Resistance.

Plot

The game's plot develops parallel to the plot of Half-Life 2. The game begins at the beginning of the uprising in City 17. One day, the citizen wakes up to find his door broken down by a Metrocop. As soon as he gets out of bed, he is hit in the head with a baton.

Lockdown

The citizen realizes that this cannot continue. Outside the window, a Civil Defense squad cordons off the street, simultaneously clearing it of all witnesses. Neighbors introduce him to a man with ties to the resistance. He gives him the keys to the door and directs him to the resistance headquarters.

Slipping By

There is a lot of equipment behind the door, as well as a Civil Defense officer guarding it. The citizen quietly slips behind him, disabling the alarm, and, opening the door, he walks out into the alley and then out onto the street. Without attracting attention (or, on the contrary, with a fight), he crosses the road. One of the doors opens and the person inside invites him in. He asks if the citizen has a "tail" with him, and then lets him into the sewers.

Crossing the Road

HEV suit in an underground base.

The citizen enters the sewers. Making his way through dark passages and flooded canals, the citizen finds an armored door. Behind it, he finds a mysterious base, and on it a HEV suit...

For your Convenience

Finally, the citizen finds a way to get to the surface. Here he is met by one of the resistance, who gives him a pistol. Together they hide behind the counter, and the Civil Defense begins the assault. At first, everything is going well for the defenders of the cafe, but then the Combine break into the battle. The defenders retreat. The citizen receives the keys to the boat.

Finding Friends

The citizen reaches the boat. He begins his journey through the canals. He then encounters a couple trying to open a gate. A guy named Jerry is killed by a sniper. The Citizen is forced to clear a path.

Zig Zagging

The Citizen continues his journey through the canals. He enters a tunnel that leads him to a destroyed subway.

Low Road

The Citizen navigates the destroyed subway, battling Combines and zombies along the way, clearing rubble with dynamite. After fighting his way through, he reaches a subway station.

End of the Line

The Combines have set up base at the station. The Citizen finds himself in the thick of it.

Holy War

Once outside, the Citizen encounters a group of resistance fighters holed up in a church. At this moment, the Combines launch an attack, which they repel with the Citizen's help. After eliminating another sniper, the Citizen exits to another street.

The Bigger They Are...

The Citizen finds himself on another street. He has to fight a strider, a sniper, and an Alliance squad. Then, one of the rebels opens the door, saying that the resistance headquarters is downstairs.

The Elvet

The Citizen finds himself at the headquarters located in The Elvet theater. The Resistance welcomes him as one of their own. An attack on the Alliance base is planned...

Infiltration

It's night outside. The squad makes its way through dark alleys to a cafe, where everything is already prepared for the attack. With the help of the Citizen, the rebels infiltrate the base, but after getting through the ventilation, the Citizen will have to find another way out.

Sneaky Business...

The Citizen sneaks past the guards and puts on a Civil Defense uniform, but the advisor is not so easily fooled. He does not let him pass, ruining the uniform.

Book Worm

The Citizen, now out of uniform, finds himself in a library occupied by Combine forces. He engages in combat with Combine forces. He is aided by local resistance fighters, but all but him are killed by the Advisor.

Sneaky Business... part two

The Citizen is forced to don the uniform again, this time that of an elite Combine soldier. He climbs up the stairs, but is again blocked by the Advisor.

Stage Fright

A squad of resistance fighters, whom the Citizen helped infiltrate the Combine base, rescue him. Together they continue on, but one of them turns traitor and locks the others in a room. The curtain rises, and the squad is attacked by Combine fighters. The Citizen climbs out and descends through the set. He punishes the traitor and saves his friends. The Commander reestablishes communication, and the squad goes outside to continue the fight. The Citizen and two other resistance fighters descend into a functioning subway. As they drive away from the station, they are caught by the Advisor. He kills everyone except the Citizen and is about to kill him when the G-Man suddenly appears, killing the Advisor. He tells the Citizen of his importance, and the game ends.

Ending

The player finds themselves on a map with Dog and a number of graves.

Weapons, vehicles, and enemies

The weapons are identical to those in Half-Life 2. The only missing enemies are the pheropods and the crossbow (which can be summoned using the console). Antlions are completely absent from the game, as are zombies, with the exception of regular ones. The modification includes an airboat.

Interesting facts

  • The mission title "The Bigger They Are..." is taken from the idiom "The bigger they are, the harder they fall."
  • Sometimes the resistance says, "Oh, Gordon Freeman! Wait a minute, you're not Gordon Freeman, are you?"
  • In addition to encounters with G-Man, the game also features Easter egg designs. There are 15 of them in total.
