Half-Life 2: Prospekt (mod)

Prospect is a modification for Half-Life 2.

Story

Gordon Freeman storms Nova Prospect. Vortigaunts help Adrian Shephard escape the G-Man's stasis so Adrian can assist Freeman in the assault. Shephard teleports to one of Nova Prospect's sections, where he discovers a weapon. Encountering resistance from Nova Prospect guards, zombies, and antlions, Adrian reaches a room with the main teleporter, recently used by Alyx Vance and Gordon Freeman.

An attempt to escape the prison via the teleporter ends in failure, as Shephard ends up in another section of Nova Prospect. Encountering resistance from Combine Overwatch soldiers, Combine Elite soldiers, and a small handful of headcrabs, Adrian reaches a room with a large portal. Activating the portal, Shephard again attempts to leave Nova Prospect, but is teleported to the orbital station. Still fighting the Combine, Adrian reaches a room with a teleporter, which transports him to a Combine-occupied part of Xen. After breaking through to the portal from Xen,

Shepard falls into a trap. Waking up in a cell, Adrian sees his guards distracted by an alarm. At that moment, the protective barrier deactivates, and Shepard, taking his weapon, escapes. Reaching the station's core, Adrian overheats, causing an explosion. Shepard is rescued by Vortigaunts. After some time, the G-Man appears, annihilates the Vortigaunts, and takes Adrian into stasis.

Gameplay

The mod's gameplay is significantly different from the original due to its increased difficulty. Now, even experienced players will struggle on the easy difficulty. The mod has a relatively dark and empty atmosphere. While it doesn't feature any new weapons or enemies, it does feature its own soundtrack.

Reviews

The mod has received mostly negative reviews. The mod's strengths included the soundtrack, voice acting, new textures, and new models. Users cited its weaknesses as an unclear plot, high price, lack of innovation, poor optimization, unreasonably high difficulty, and unnecessary flashbacks that don't advance the story and detract from the gameplay:

  • Nova Prospekt was destroyed due to Alyx Vance and Gordon Freeman teleporting, causing a massive explosion that destroyed the entire prison, but the modification shows the prison intact.
  • After Shepard entered the "destroyed" teleporter, he was teleported to various locations, including the Arctic, where dead rebels and Combine can be seen, although the Resistance and Alliance have not yet discovered the Borealis.
  • After being teleported, Gordon Freeman is somehow kidnapped by the Alliance, which contradicts the canon of the series.
  • Combine devices, with the exception of Mossman's, can only teleport objects or beings to other universes, not to the same one. The mod, however, shows that the Combine can do this.

Interesting facts

  • The mod's developer promised to create a fully functional third-person model for Adrian Shephard, add developer commentary, and an additional storyline divided into episodes. The mod itself, however, adds a gas mask to Freeman's standard model, and lacks developer commentary and the additional storyline.
  • The main character of the additional storyline was supposed to be a certain Jack.
  • In earlier versions of the mod, the main menu featured tabs for additional storylines and developer commentary. In the current version, only the "Developer Commentary" tab remains.
  • In mod, Adrian Shephard's PCV is a slightly retextured HEV suit.
