Kane will tell you that the murdered boy you saw in the Lazarus Vault is not Prince Albrecht. The sage believes the prince himself has become the corporeal form of the Lord of Terror, and now all you can do is fight him to secure Tristram and put an end to these nightmares. Descend to level 16.
It's divided into four sections and inhabited by two types of monsters: blood knights and mage-lawyers. Three of the four sections are temporarily closed, and they open gradually using a system of levers. Clearing one section and opening the levers allows you to proceed further.
To fight Diablo, you'll first need to defeat numerous knights and advocates and lift all the levers. The Lord of Terror himself awaits you in the western lower room, surrounded by his minions. He attacks with the Apocalypse spell, so be very careful around him. It's a good idea to lure him to you to reduce the amount of fighting his defenders. However, it depends.
However, if your leveled-up hero has reached Diablo, he shouldn't be too difficult to deal with. You can't save after the demon's death! So before finishing off Diablo, make sure you've collected all your items, gold, and so on. After defeating him, watch the final cutscene. ;)
