On the 14th level of the underworld, you may encounter a black knight named Lachdanan. Don't be too quick to classify him as one of the "bad guys" like Gharbad and Zhar: he's actually a noble and honorable character. Lachdanan will tell you his story, which many residents of Tristram will confirm. Long ago, he was the commander of King Leoric's knights and served his king faithfully.
He remained loyal to his ruler even when Leoric sent his troops, led by Lachdanan, to certain death in the war with Wetmarch. However, Lachdanan and some of his warriors survived. They were forced to hastily retreat and return home, where they were branded traitors.
Leoric ordered his bodyguards to kill the "wicked" Lachdanan, and he was forced to defend himself. Ultimately, Lachdanan's warriors survived and managed to surround Leoric. He cursed them and hated them with all his heart, and Lachdanan, seeing that the king had lost the last of his sanity, killed him with his own sword.
Before his death, Leoric cursed everyone who was near him at the hour of his death, and therefore Lakdanan is doomed to wander through a labyrinth teeming with monsters, unable to find salvation.
Alone among them, he can still resist the madness that has overtaken his warriors. Only the Golden Elixir, whose magic is capable of breaking the spell cast by the fallen monarch, can free him.
This Elixir can be found on the 15th level of the Labyrinth: look for the bright golden vial. It's eye-catching and impossible to miss. When you bring the Elixir to Lakdanan, he will give you his helmet, drink the potion, and die, thus freeing his soul from captivity.
Reward: Veil of Steel, a helmet with powerful magical properties.
