Diablo 1 Walkthrough -> Farm Garden
Look in your Hellfire installation directory. If there's a command.txt file there, check it to see if it contains the line "cowquest;." If it doesn't, or if there's no such file at all, you'll see a guy like this next to the cows standing in the northeast while playing the game.
This is Lester the Farmer, who will give you a quest if you're at least level 15. He'll tell you that while quietly tending to his garden, he saw strange plants creeping up from the ground and entangling him and his garden. He then ran away and is now waiting for someone to see what's going on.
Lester will give you a rune bomb, which you can use to clear a passageway into the Hives. This passageway is located near where you spawned at the beginning of the game, just across the river. Once you've descended into the Hives, return to the farmer and he'll give you an Auric Amulet:
