Diablo 1 Walkthrough -> Zhar the Madman
Location: Level 8, Catacombs.
Given by: Heat the Madman.
This quest is similar to the one in Gharbad. Sometimes, on the 8th level of the labyrinth, you can find a library room with a bookcase and numerous pedestals holding scrolls. In the midst of all this splendor stands the sorcerer Zhar, leaning on his cane. He won't try to attack you, but will merely warn you against touching anything in "his library."
If curiosity gets the better of you and you try to take the book from his bookcase, Zhar will fly into a rage and start hurling spells at you. The sorcerer is much harder to kill than Gharbad, so think twice before engaging him.
He's quite skilled with magic and disappears when you get close to him, teleporting to another part of the room. It's easier to defeat him with a character with a ranged attack, like, say, a rogue. As a warrior, you'll have to chase Zhar around the library. Although you might be lucky and be able to "lock" him in a corner, preventing him from teleporting.
Reward: a book and scrolls from the library, as well as a magic item.
