Broken Hills

Fallout 2 Walkthrough  → Broken Hills

Broken Hills is a peaceful community of ghouls, humans, and mutants who, despite their differences, try to live in peace. However, they are full of enemies, both external and internal.

If you drive into town, you'll run over a ghoul. Fortunately, they won't be too seriously injured. After complaining about the lack of road signs in the desert, they'll tell you about the time they were hit by a Nuka-Cola truck and flipped over (an event from Fallout 1 ):

Talk to the doctor and listen to his story, after which he will treat you for free. If you hate super mutants, complete Jacob's quests – his pharmacy is behind the doc's house. Sheriff Marcus, a super mutant and one of the town's founders, will task you with finding missing people – they're in a remote corner of the ant-infested dungeon. Report this to Marcus.

Next, he'll ask you to fix the air purifier in the uranium mine. Talk to Zaius, the mutant mine foreman, about this, and he'll send you to Renesco in  New Reno with the necessary instructions. Once you've got it, you'll need to install it. If you don't have Energy Armor, you'll need Stimpaks – the mines are stifling. Zaius will reward you with a Combat Shotgun. After repairing the mine, Marcus will agree to join you.

If you go through the wall to the right of the mine entrance, you'll find a sleeping pilot who's well-preserved.

There's a crate next to it containing uranium ore. Take the ore to the refinery—they'll agree to refine it for 1,000 coins. Come back a day later, and they'll offer you 1,500 coins to keep the uranium. Why do you need the uranium? Take the money instead!

A smelly individual lives in the eastern part of the city—this is indicated by the numerous flies around his house. He'll ask you to connect his house to the power grid so he can take a shower. Do it yourself, or persuade the undead at the power station.

A talking plant grows in a garden bed near the hatch to the ant dungeon. It will ask you for help (you need a shovel). In gratitude, it will tell you how to defeat the chess-playing scorpion.

A ghoul lives in the house near which it asks you to land. He'll promise to tell you about a treasure in exchange for some items – all of which are in the city center, you just have to look for them. With the long-awaited information about the treasure, head to the well in the center. You'll drop the treasure to the bottom.

Editor's note: as a last resort, a rubber doll for the ghoul can be found at a porn studio in New Reno.

Afterwards, talk to Mickey the Treasure Hunter, and he'll agree to go down. However, this is a terrible fake – the bag contains 10,000 bottle caps, long out of use. Deeply upset by this, you'll forget to get Mickey out of the well. Run to the Raider Camp .
