Fallout 2 Walkthrough → Redding
A mining town where gold is mined. It's a bone of contention between the major cities.
After purchasing the Highwayman and freeing Woody in the Den (the very same Ananius mummy), head to Redding. Here you'll learn about the rivalry between the major cities for control of the gold-rich mines. If your level allows, complete the sheriff's quests or retrieve the excavator chip from the mines inhabited by aliens (wanamingos).
The best way to get there is from the cemetery or through the well near the house. This same route leads to the locked room of the casino. Be careful – the gray alien is a female:
She's as dangerous as the Deathclaw female. Give the chip to someone whose ideology you favor.
Editor's note: you can also complete the mayor's quest to clear out the Wanamingo mine by purchasing shares from him for 1,000 coins. Killing all the creatures will allow you to sell the mine for double the price.
After completing the sheriff's final task to eliminate the local gang leader, he will give you the sheriff's badge, his duties, and a warning about the other, older Morton brothers. Talk to the local Dr. Johnson; he'll tell you about the jet-fueled nature of most miners. You can report this to Councilman Gregory McClure and Dr. Troy in Vault City.
For this purpose, take a sample of the jet with you. Dr. Troy will study the jet and create an antidote. Take the sample of the antidote to Doc Johnson in Redding. You can overhear the doc's conversation with the idiot he's sheltering—very funny
Editor's note: As an alternative to the previous method, you can learn the antidote to jet from Myron, who is located in the stables near New Reno.
In the city center, a little boy will tell you how his father, Melchior, a magician and miner, was taken by the Iron Men. The Enclave recruited miners to work at the Mariposa military base. You'll meet him later – he's changed greatly. Now you can go to New Reno or Broken Hills .
